In the summer, we take a dip into the lake, river, ocean, or pool. In the fall, when it’s cooler, we can take a dip into the book of Proverbs. We find Proverbs right after Psalms in the Old Testament probably near the middle of your Bible.

In Proverbs we have a collection of “oner liners.” These are short sayings of moral wisdom and faith. So this collection can be dipped into and not downed all at once. These words guide us into wisdom along with the Ten Commandments of Moses and the words of Jesus.
We read, “Wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you desire cannot compare with her.” (Proverbs 8: 11).

In Chapters 10-22, we have the collected saying of Solomon. We read, “The way of the faithless is their ruin.” (13:15) “A soft answer turns away wrath.” (15:1) “A cheerful heart is a good medicine.” (17:22)

There are many other sayings to savor and treasure in the thirty-one chapters of Proverbs. I want to quote one that can always guide us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3: 5-6). May all your ways be God’s ways.
