NY Agriculture in the Classroom
Announces April 8 Ag Literacy Day

Watertown, NY – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County and First Pioneer Farm Credit are teaming up again this year to recruit local farmers and maple producers to visit 2nd grade classrooms in their area. As many farmers as want to can participate in this important event. Mark Kellogg, the county coordinator for the project offers this: “Young people need to understand that food comes from farms not grocery stores! What better way to help them understand than by meeting a real farmer?”

How many kids understand where the food on their table comes from? On April 8, students throughout New York will be learning about what happens in the garden all year on the third annual New York Agriculture Literacy Day, coordinated by New York Agriculture in the Classroom. Ag Literacy Day will be celebrated across the state in second grade classrooms with a visit from a community member involved in agriculture. The book Sugarbush Spring by Marsha Wilson Chall will be read to the class and then donated to the school library.

If you are willing to read, please contact Molly Ames at 788-8450 or email her at mba7@cornell.edu by March 12 to register or answer any questions.

New York Agriculture in the Classroom is a partnership of Cornell University, NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets, NYS Education Department, and NY Farm Bureau. The program works with cooperative extension educators, teachers, Farm Bureau members, and others throughout the state to foster an awareness, understanding, and appreciation of agriculture and the total food and fiber system.
